Are UFOs Time Travelers from the Future?

Internet searches for the keyword acronym “UFO” (unidentified flying object) are among the most popular on the Internet. According to Google, there are five million global searches per month for the keyword acronym “UFO” (without the quotes).

Let us start with a little background. Surprisingly, the United States Air Force (USAF) officially created the acronym “UFO” in 1953. Their intent was to replace the more popular phrases such as “flying saucers” and “flying discs” because of the variety of shapes reported. In their official statement, the United States Air Force defined the term UFO as “any airborne object which, by performance, aerodynamic characteristics, or unusual features, does not conform to any presently known aircraft or missile type, or which cannot be positively identified as a familiar object.”

The phenomena, namely UFO sightings, are worldwide. Various governments and civilian committees have studied them. The conclusions reached by the various organizations that have studied them vary significantly. Some conclude UFOs do not represent a threat and are of no scientific value (see, e.g., 1953 CIA Robertson Panel, USAF Project Blue Book, Condon Committee). Others conclude the exact opposite (see, e.g., 1999 French COMETA study, 1948 USAF Estimate of the Situation, Sturrock Panel).

Given the sheer volume of unexplained sightings by credible witnesses, including military, police, and civilian witnesses, there is little doubt that the UFO phenomenon is real and worldwide, and for the most part, there is no widely accepted public or scientific explanation of what they are or what their intentions might be.

Three popular speculations regarding UFOs are:

  1. They are future generations of humans who have mastered the science of time travel, and they are coming back either to observe us or to carry out other intentions.
  2. They are technologically advanced aliens from another planet who have mastered the science of time travel, and they are coming here either to observe us or to carry out other intentions.
  3. They are secret government (United States or any government) experimental spacecraft, and by some accounts they are reverse engineered from advanced alien spacecraft in the government’s possession.

In my estimation, the ninety-page 1999 French COMETA study (the English translation stands for “Committee for In-Depth Studies”) is the most authoritative source of UFO information and provides a thoughtful, balanced view. Here are the facts that led me to this position:

  • The COMETA membership consisted of an independent group of mostly former “auditors” (i.e., defense and intelligence analysts) at the Institute of Advanced Studies for National Defense, or IHEDN, a high-level French military think tank, and by various other highly qualified experts. The independence of the group lends credence that the findings and conclusions would not be censored.
  • The French government did not sponsor it. This lends credence that the COMETA members were objective and not politically guided.
  • The COMETA study was carried out over several years. This lends credence that the COMETA study is a thorough account of UFO phenomena, not a hastily put out government press release.

The 1999 COMETA study concluded:

  1. About 5% of the UFO cases studied were inexplicable.
  2. The best hypothesis to explain them was the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH), but they acknowledged this is not the only possible hypothesis.
  3. The authors accused the US government of engaging in a massive cover-up of UFO evidence.

According to the 1999 COMETA study, a small but significant percentage of UFOs are likely of extraterrestrial origin. Does this rule out that they are future generations of humans, visiting the past? In my opinion, it does not. Even the conclusions of the 1999 COMETA study did not rule out this possibility. However, there is no conclusive evidence either way.

The main questions regarding time travel and UFOs are:

  • Are the UFOs future generations of humans, time traveling back to our past and present?
  • Are the UFOs alien spacecraft, or secret government experimental spacecraft, able to traverse great distances using technologies essential to time travel, like a matter-antimatter propulsion system?

UFO Sightings by Astronauts

There are few witnesses more credible than astronauts. Often, they are scientists, with excellent powers of observation and objectivity.

When an astronaut reports seeing a UFO, people will take note. In a live broadcast on NBC in 1963, Major Gordon Cooper, the last astronaut to orbit the earth solo, was completing his 22 orbit when he said he could see a glowing green object approaching fast. NASA had Major Cooper’s visual sighting and Muchea’s tracking  station radar confirmation of this fast moving green glowing object, before it made a sharp turn and shot away. (This was not Major Cooper’s first UFO sighting. In 1951, he had sighted a UFO while piloting an F-86 Sabrejet over Western Germany.)

Upon his return to Earth, Major Cooper was not permitted to discuss his sighting with the media. Reporters were instructed not to question him about the UFO sighting.

Major Cooper testified before the United Nations: “I believe that these extra-terrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets… Most astronauts were reluctant to discuss UFOs.” He added, “I did have occasion in 1951 to have two days of observation of many flights of them, of different sizes, flying in fighter formation, generally from east to west over Europe.”

In a taped interview by J. L. Ferrando, Major Cooper said: “For many years I have lived with a secret, in a secrecy imposed on all specialists in astronautics. I can now reveal that every day, in the USA, our radar instruments capture objects of form and composition unknown to us. And there are thousands of witness reports and a quantity of documents to prove this, but nobody wants to make them public. Why? Because authority is afraid that people may think of God knows what kind of horrible invaders. So the password still is: We have to avoid panic by all means.”

Major Cooper is not the only astronaut/NASA pilot to have witnessed UFOs.

  • Donald Slayton, a Mercury astronaut, in an interview asserted he had seen UFOs in 1951: “I was testing a P-51 fighter in Minneapolis when I spotted this object. I was at about 10,000 feet on a nice, bright, sunny afternoon. I thought the object was a kite, then I realized that no kite is gonna fly that high. As I got closer it looked like a weather balloon, grey and about three feet in diameter. But as soon as I got behind the darn thing it didn’t look like a balloon anymore. It looked like a saucer, a disk. About the same time, I realized that it was suddenly going away from me – and there I was, running at about 300 miles per hour. I tracked it for a little way, and then all of a sudden the damn thing just took off. It pulled about a 45 degree climbing turn and accelerated and just flat disappeared.”
  • On July 17, 1962, Major Robert White reported a UFO during his fifty-eight-mile high flight on an X-15, “I have no idea what it could be. It was grayish in color and about thrity to forty feet away.”
  • On May 11, 1962, NASA pilot Joseph Walker admitted that one of his tasks was to detect UFOs during his X-15 flights. He had filmed five or six UFOs during his previous record breaking fifty-mile-high flight in April, 1962. During a lecture at the Second National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space Research in Seattle, Washington, Walker said: “I don’t feel like speculating about them. All I know is what appeared on the film which was developed after the flight.” None of those films have been released for public viewing.
  • Apollo 17 commander, Eugene Cernan, was quoted by the Los Angeles Times in 1973, “…I’ve been asked (about UFOs) and I’ve said publicly I thought they (UFOs) were somebody else, some other civilization.”

There have been other sightings of UFOs by astronauts, but they are not as well documented as the ones above. Therefore, I have omitted them.

This article leaves little doubt that UFOs have been reported by credible witnesses and even recorded on radar. The evidence also suggests that those in authority are intentionally keeping such reports from the public to whatever extent they are able to do so.

Are Aliens and UFOs Real? — Are there advanced aliens? Physicist Louis Del Monte addresses the question: Are there advanced aliens? In this concluding segment, Del Monte argues that there are 100-200 billion planets in the Milky Way galaxy, but only 1500 are within 50 light years of Earth. Our radio and television broadcasts would have had time to reach them. However, the transmission signals from our radio and television signals are weak and only reach out about .3 light years before getting lost in the noise of space. In addition, Del Monte discusses how advanced the extraterrestrial aliens would be if they evolved as little as 100 years ahead of us. Lastly, Del Monte discusses the Fermi Paradox, namely the likelihood that advanced aliens exist, but the lack of supporting scientific evidence. Nonetheless, from a statistical viewpoint, Del Monte argues that advanced aliens exist.
